The Free Aero Race Bib Short has been engineered as Castelli’s premier race short. Everything about the Free Aero provides a cyclist with the advantages of a pair of bib shorts that maximize aerodynamics and have amazingly comfortable features. While providing the support a body needs when riding all out with the intention of winning, the Free Aero keeps you dry and cool by circulating air over your skin and still has the right amount of compression to stimulate blood flow and provide a second skin feel. Castelli’s first Free Aero Race debuted in 2007 and has since improved as Castelli has developed new fabrics and construction methods. Castelli also gets feedback to improve their cycling apparel from professional racing teams. It is input from the riders who took on the challenges of stages in the Tour de France and La Vuelta a Espana that makes Castelli clothing preferred by so many professionals. As the main race bib shorts for their own professional teams, Castelli had to design speed into every fiber of the bib shorts. Knowing that the pros ride more than 30,000 km per year, Castelli had to make durable bib shorts keep a rider comfortable on 5, 6, and 7 hour rides. The Vortex dimpled fabric on the sides creates an almost glass like surface that slides through the wind with no interruption. In wind tunnel testing, this construction reduced power output requirements by 10 watts at 50 km/hour. The Forza fabric on the insides of the legs fits perfectly so the shorts do not snag on the seat. This fabric is also durable so it stays in good form even after many long days on the bike. Castelli broke boundaries when they introduced the Progetto X2 Air seatpad. This Castelli race-ready seat pad is different from most multi-density seat protectors. The two-layer design has a stretchy skin layer cover that doesn’t rub against the padding beneath. The freedom of movement between the two layers saves the rider from any chafing and irritation. Closest to the skin is a smooth perforated foam layer that allows air to flow and keep the rider cool, comfortable and dry. On the skin layer, the four-way seamless stretch ensures the padding adjusts to your body’s anatomy and treatment keeps you healthy. On the padding layer, multi-density padding provides protection without unnecessary bulk. Perforated viscous padding is added under the ischial and perineum areas which are the most sensitive seat regions. The shorts stay more comfortably in place thanks to the Giro Air Mesh leg gripper elastic that spreads pressure over a wider area. This construction also flattens the surface and saves 10 watts at 50 km/hour. The Carré engineered bib straps are porous, breathable and lie flat so they keep the shorts in place without overheating the body or chafing the skin. Castelli’s innovative double V construction on the front keeps the shorts in place without squashing the stomach. Mesh on the back that allows air to circulate keeps the torso cool. To top it off, a rear pocket can store a race radio or a phone/MP3 player.
