Jeremy Hunt, the Cervélo TestTeam rider raced in the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, the first one-day UCI level bike race held in Belgium during February. This is a highly competitive race in cold weather, but when the intensity of the pace raised his body temperature he overheated in his bib tights. He took the initiative to find the right type of shorts to keep him warm in cold weather but that would still keep his body temperature from going too high. Hunt knew he needed a little more bib short length on his legs because of the cold weather and that he needed a warm but highly breathable fabric that would evaporate sweat and body heat. His solution to the dilemma of staying warm but not overheating was to create knee length leg warmers that didn’t pinch the back of his legs. A few years after Hunt began to race successfully in his new shorts, many of the pro racers followed suit. After six years, Castelli jumped on the discovery and designed the Castelli Omloop Women’s Thermal Bib Short, a bib short with a new fabric that has a soft raw edge at the back of the knee that won’t cut into skin. The Omloop bib shorts are made with soft Thermoflex fabric that traps warm air against your skin and is definitely warmer than a straight thermal short. Another advantage of Thermoflex is that it doesn’t cause you to overheat because this same air circulates to dry sweat and evaporate heat. The women’s version is technically the same as the men’s version. The only differences are the Progetto X2 Air seat pad is woman specific, and that the mesh bib straps and shape of the shorts are designed for a woman’s body. Castelli designed the Omloop with their best chamois pad, the Progetto X2 Air seat pad. This top-notch chamois pad is made with a skin layer and a saddle layer. Viscous comfort inserts are placed between these layers to protect the most sensitive parts of the body. The layer closest to the skin has a four-way stretch and a microdenier fabric that allows air to flow right through the surface. The fabric adjusts to your body shape, it repels water and aids in evaporation so you stay dry. The seamless top is exceptionally comfortable and the o treatment fights away germs. The layer against the seat is a seamless cushioning layer made with multi-density foam placed in the right areas so as to maximize comfort. Perforated, breathable viscous padding is added under the highly sensitive ischial and perineum pressure areas. The Omloop Thermal Bib Shorts are the perfect shorts for the female rider who plans to stay fit year-round.
