Castelli Sanremo 4.0 Speed Suit

The Castelli Sanremo 4.0 Speed Suit is comfortable and very fast in time trials, criteriums and road races. Most speed suits are limited to time trials, but Castelli created a speed suit with 2 rear pockets that provide a place for riding food while adding next to no wind drag. Finding the right material and seam placement in order to create a fast piece of cycling gear has been Castelli’s goal for the last 100 years. Most recently, Castelli has developed something called the CFD analysis. They use both wind-tunnel testing along with pro rider input to create new fast fabrics and to place them in the right places. The Sanremo 4.0, designed to be fastest at 30 to 55 km/h (18 to 34 miles/h), is why the Sanremo 4.0 is a “speed suit.” Besides speed, the Sanremo is amazingly comfortable thanks to the carefully placed fabrics that keep you dry and cool. The top of the speed suit takes after Castelli’s fastest cycling jersey, the Aero Race. The shoulders and sleeves are made with the Velocity Rev2, a tightly woven fabric that creates an aerodynamic surface. The difference with Lycra, another elastic fabric, is that the Velocity fabric dries instantly. The Sanremo 4.0 fits perfectly and dries instantly. Castelli made the stretchy sleeves longer than standard jersey sleeves. The length, the stretch and the edge that lies completely flat against skin creates a perfectly smooth surface for airflow. The two rear pockets are narrower for better aerodynamics. By reducing 3 rear pockets to 2, they are easier to access when in need of food. The back of the top portion is made of the highly breathable 3D mesh back. When you sweat, body moisture evaporates instantly. On the front of the top portion, the YKK® Vislon® zipper lies flat against body and it slides open with one swipe by using forefinger and thumb. The lower portion of the suit is designed after Castelli’s Free Aero Race 4 bib short which has proven to be the most comfortable bib short for long endurance rides and fast races. Like the top portion, the bottom portion is highly breathable, so it wicks sweat virtually instantly. Across the thigh portion of the shorts, the Forza fabric gently compresses. It is tight enough to ensure aerodynamics, but flexible enough to allow complete freedom of movement on each pedal stroke. On the inner thighs, a combination of Forza fabric and Lycra® are used to create material that doesn’t snag on your seat and it withstands the abrasion that results when pedaling your bike for hours on end. The Giro4 leg gripper is wide so it distributes the grip over a larger area making it more comfortable and more aerodynamic. The Progetto X2 Air chamois pad is Castelli’s best chamois pad. The padding is unmatched in softness. Made with multi-density foam, the chamois provides the right amount of padding in the right places so a rider is protected without feeling like he is riding in a diaper. Castelli used minimal padding in the seat pad while ensuring a rider is supported and completely mobile on 100+ mile mountain races or top speed criteriums. The outer layer of the chamois has a four-way stretch so it adjusts to the specific shape of a rider’s seat area. An anti-odor treatment has been added to keep the chamois from getting smelly.
