Johan Vansummeren stormed through the 2011 Paris-Roubaix to take in a solo win in the Queen of the Classics. Vansummeren won this classic single day cobbled road race wearing the original Castelli Sanremo Speed Suit. The Paris-Roubaix is a treacherous race over a treacherous course which is why it is also known as the Hell of the North. Castelli designed a speed suit specifically to meet the challenges of a course that requires a racer to stay comfortable, mobile and very fast over 256 kilometers (160.3 miles) of flat roads littered with cobbles and ruts. Vansummeren broke away from a four-man group 15 kilometers from the finish. He held off the chase despite having to ride on a flat as he approached the velodrome that housed the finish line. Vansummeren is a tough racer clothed with Castelli’s best cycling clothing. Since 2011, Castelli found ways to further improve the Sanremo Speed Suit. In the Sanremo 3.2 Speed Suit, Castelli changed the fabric on the front from Lycra® to a 98% polyester fabric which dries faster. They created a bit more surface texture to make it even faster in the wind tunnel. The short portion is made from the Free Aero Race short that has Vortex dimpled fabric on the front for aerodynamics and Forza fabric with 38% Lycra on the inner legs. This combination provides shorts that fit the legs without creasing or rubbing against the seat. The mesh inserts keep a racer dry as he sweats in hot weather. The GiroAir mesh-like leg gripper elastic distributes the grip over a larger area so the shorts stay comfortably in place. The Progetto X2 Air Seat Pad is soft, pliable and multi-layered for maximum comfort and minimum bulk. This seat pad was designed specifically for racers. The upper portion is based on Castelli’s fastest jersey, the Aero Race 5.1. The top manages moisture and the 3 rear pockets don’t sag while loaded up with race food. The Velocity fabric on the front and mesh on the back provide a close fitting top that dries immediately. Castelli combined their top jersey with shorts into a skinsuit where the overlapping front makes it easy to put on, easy for pit stops and easy to open up for hot climbs. The Sanremo 3.2 is a skinsuit for road racing.
